We’ve all been there: a notification pops up from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) saying your helper’s work permit is expiring in eight weeks. For this maid insurance matter, your first instinct is probably to call your agent. It’s what most of us do because the alternative feels like a mountain of paperwork we don't have time for. You think about the medical checkups, the $5,000 security bond, and the digital forms, and it just feels "safer" to let a pro handle it.
But here is the reality: "safety" often comes with a service fee that can average $300 to $400. Even if an agency offers to do it for "free," there is a hidden cost. They usually limit you to a tiny panel of just two or three insurance providers they partner with. By going DIY with ECICS, you aren't just saving on fees; you're gaining the freedom to handpick the best protection for your helper at a price that fits your budget.
When you renew through an agency, the total amount paid is sometimes bundled to include the insurance premium, their administrative fee and the mandatory MOM renewal fee. This can mask the actual cost of the insurance plan you are getting.
With a DIY renewal, the cost breakdown is transparent. You see exactly what the $35 MOM fee covers, and you can decide which ECICS coverage level best fits your budget and needs. You are paying directly for the insurance and the required renewal fee, without additional administrative charges layered in..
Taking charge of your own renewal gives you a level of clarity and control compared to renewing with a maid agency. See the key differences between DIY and agency-assisted renewal in the table below:
1. Agency Correspondent vs. Self-Management
When you choose a DIY renewal, you take on a self-managed administrative process. While an agency monitors MOM correspondence on your behalf, the DIY route gives you direct control over receiving and acting on the official MOM notification, which typically arrives 8 weeks before expiry.
2. Transparent Cost Savings
A significant advantage of the DIY approach is the lower out-of-pocket cost. You pay only the mandatory S35 non-refundable MOM renewal fee directly online.
3. Manual Application Submission
Under the DIY model, you must manually execute the online application. This involves accessing the FDW eService via Singpass to update the helper's passport, residential address, and insurance policy details. Agencies handle this through their own authorized logins once you grant them permission in the eService.
4. Securing Mandatory Insurance and Bonds
Before initiating the renewal, you must purchase a comprehensive insurance policy. It is essential to ensure your insurer transmits the security bond data to MOM. While an agency manages this acquisition for you, a DIY employer verifies this transmission personally to meet regulatory dependencies.
5. Validating Statutory Requirements
A successful renewal depends on meeting MOM’s criteria, such as the helper's age (23-60 years) and passport validity. DIY employers must validate these statutory requirements themselves, whereas an agency would review eligibility and advise on potential disqualifiers, such as an unfit 6-monthly medical exam (6ME).
6. Understanding Work Permit Card Procedures
Upon receiving the renewal outcome, MOM determines if a new physical Work Permit card is required. If a new card is issued, you must void the old card by cutting it in half to follow security protocols. However, MOM may instead notify you to continue using the existing card.
7. Assuming Compliance Accountability
By opting for a self-service renewal, the employer assumes full accountability for data accuracy and meeting strict regulatory deadlines. Late renewals are considered illegal employment and can result in fines or permit revocation, so adhering to the MOM timeline is critical for compliance.
What many employers may not realise is that MOM has spent years building a digital infrastructure designed specifically for direct employer use. It is now the standard way the system operates.
At ECICS, we are fully integrated with this framework. When you purchase a maid insurance policy with us, we will assist to transmit your bond details digitally to MOM. Separately, the mandatory 6month medical examination process is also digitised, with clinics uploading results directly into MOM’s system.
You are not managing stacks of paperwork. You are simply logging in to the MOM portal to review and confirm information that has already been securely submitted.
Important Note on Your Role: While ECICS and your clinic will help by sending the bond and 6ME results to MOM, you will still need to complete the online renewal form yourself. Kindly refer to “The Confidence Checklist” below to ensure all required items are prepared prior to commencing the online renewal process.
Gathering these four items ensures your online renewal is just a simple "check and click" process.

When renewing with an agency, part of what you pay is often used to cover their overhead or commissions. By purchasing directly from ECICS, every cent goes towards protecting what truly matters: your helper and your home. No unnecessary middleman markups, just straightforward value.
Waiting for an agent to revert or coordinate updates can slow things down. With ECICS integrated directly with MOM’s system, you remain in control. Once your helper’s medical results and insurance details are reflected, you can complete the renewal through the MOM portal in just a few steps. It is quick, straightforward, and done at a time that works best for you..
Agency renewals are limited to selected insurer panels or pre-set plans. With ECICS, you can review the available coverage tiers yourself and choose the option that best fits your budget and needs. Clear pricing. Clear benefits. No bundled surprises.

Handling your own renewal isn’t just about saving a few bucks, it’s about peace of mind. By using your Singpass to log in to the official MOM portal, you are completing the process directly through MOM’s recognised system. It is designed to give employers full visibility and control over their renewal, and we are here to support you every step of the way to keep the experience smooth and stress free.
Step #1: The Prep Work (8–12 weeks before expiry)
Before you touch any paperwork, have a chat with your helper. If you both agree to renew, this is the time to check two things: her passport validity and her 6-monthly medical examination (6ME).
Step #2: The Online Renewal (After medical and insurance are synced)
Once the MOM portal shows that the medical results are negative/cleared out and the insurance bond from ECICS is "Active," you can finalise the permit. Please allow 2–3 working days after purchasing the maid insurance policy for the bond to be transmitted and reflected in the system before checking the status.
Step #3: Receiving the New Card (If applicable)
You’re almost at the finish line. After you submit the renewal and make the payment, you will be able to see the status change on the MOM portal.
